Radio appeal for more Asian Carers

14th December 2007

The trio were interviewed on the current need by Pathway Care to recruit more Asian foster carers, due to the increasing number of asylum seeking children needing stable family homes, a need which has risen by 500% over the last five years.

Davindra, aged 60, and his wife Biro are Sikh and have been fostering for over 5 years. They don’t have any children of their own however friends thought they would make great foster parents and after looking into what fostering involved the coupled decided they wanted to become foster carers because they felt they had a lot to offer and wanted to help disadvantaged children and teenagers.  They accept foster children mainly on a short-term and respite basis, which involves caring for foster children for anything from a few days at a time up to a few months or more. The couple have fostered around 4 Muslim asylum seeking children from various countries including Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.   Davindra strongly believes it is important for Asian asylum seeking foster children to maintain their cultural and religious identity. He and his wife support and encourage the Muslim foster children in their care to practice their religion and have even risen early in the morning (4am) to prepare food when the children have been fasting. They also provide the Muslim foster children in their care with Halal meat. Davindra says to be a good foster carer you have to be patient and a good listener. It can be challenging and is not suitable for everyone however the rewards outweigh any difficulties. Davindra says helping a young person to turn their life around for the better is the most rewarding job in the world.
